Learning Stories: Art History Fieldtrip

I recently took a group of my online learners of Art history level 2 students to Auckland to visit the
Auckland Art gallery with support from Michael Clarke. We went predominantly to see a touring exhibition of HonorĂ© Daumier lithographs who is an important Realist artist of the 1800’s. The group met at the Gallery, as we were coming from 4 different places Motueka, Mahurangi, Christchurch and Ashburton, we had a moment to bond and then we were off. We had time to look, discuss and contemplate the work. It was so wonderful to see the real work, to have first-hand experience of a European artist we were studying. We were then lucky to have a tour by one of Auckland galleries educationalists about some of the work in the Gallery’s collection that links to our area of study.

A fantastic afternoon was had by all and so nice to meet some of our on line learners in person, a rare opportunity. The Mahurangi girls headed home and the rest of us happily settled into our hostel. After dinner we had a rather scary, yet highly entertaining trip to the cinema to watch The Conjuring 2. There was a lot of screaming occurring not just from Mr Clarke. The Saturday morning was a quick review of the work we had seen the day before and then shopping before we had to head home. A valuable experience was had by all, for some their first visit to Auckland and a gallery.
